Anya was born Aud in the year 860 in Sweden. She was a sweet and generous girl. She fell in love when she was about 20 years old with a viking warrior named Olaf. Not too long after their marriage, Olaf slept with a barmaid and in retaliation Aud turned him into a troll. This got the attention of the demon D'Hoffryn, who offered Aud the chance to be an immortal vengeance demon, granting wishes for scorned women. Aud took his offer and became Anyanka. She exacted vengence for over 1,000 years before coming to Sunnydale, CA. She posed as a high school student, Anya Emerson, and granted a wish to Cordelia Chase. In the wish-altered world that followed from the wish-granting, Giles found and destroyed Anyanka's power center, a silver pendant, and not only undid Cordelia's wish but made Anyanka human. Now just Anya, she hung around until almost graduation, even asked Xander Harris to the prom, but left town when she found out about the Mayor's planned ascension. She came back to Sunnydale a couple of years later and slept with Xander, trying to get him out of her system. She didn't get along with most of the Scooby gang, but eventually became part of the group as she and Xander fell in love. She discovered (while playing The Game of Life) that she had an intense love of capitalism and working with money, and after the opening day of The Magic Box (under the management of Giles), was hired to work there. Anya and Xander got engaged during the near-apocalypse with Glory (at the end of season 5), and announced it to the group a few months later, on Halloween, after Buffy had been resurrected. The most recently defeated "Monster of the Week" was a demon named Sweet, who caused everyone to sing and dance like in a musical.

Personality: Anya is a very singular person. Her many many MANY years as a demon have somewhat detracted from her ability to function socially in a normal fashion. She's very blunt, and very quirky. She doesn't have much of a filter - she says what she thinks. Rather like Cordelia, but in a way that's more innocent and less cutting. She loves money, and working with money. Some aspects of living as a human are confusing and perplexing to her, like how you need to have money before you can buy things. She can be bitter about not being a demon anymore, sometimes, and doesn't regret the things she did as a vengeance demon, but she honestly cares about her friends. She also has a paralyzing phobia of bunnies.
